Enviro-schools Bronze Award

This term our big idea has been celebrations. On Tuesday, we had plenty to celebrate! Te Mahia School has reached the Bronze stage of being recognised on our journey of sustainability and becoming kaitiaki of our environment here at school and in the community. Bronze is a massive achievement and the projects of learning for this were started many years ago. As Caitlin put it, "Only when the last tree has died, and the last river is poisoned, the last fish caught… will we realise that we cannot eat money." Thank you to all of the guests, whanau and kaumatua that attended our celebrations. The children are proud of Te Mahia School being an Enviro-school. There are only 5 in Hawke's Bay, 2 Silver Schools and only 1 Green Gold. We will be exploring precious energy next year and also be involved with the Whangawehi Waste Water Management Scheme and protecting our awa. Watch the space!

Beach/Water Safety Day

How lucky are we to live in Paradise. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, and we got to spend the day at the Beach. Kayaking, Buoyancy, Snorkeling, Shade/Shelter, Fishing and Sand Art were the 6 rotations we moved around to today. So cool to have parents, siblings and whanau join us. Mahia Camp 2013

Eastern Zone Athletics

Congratulations to all of Te Mahia School students that participated in athletics on Monday.  The sun was shining and the field and track events were challenging. We had limited time to rehearse with camp last week, however I log throwing on the beach definitely contributed to our great results. Inter-school athletics is next Friday - GO MAHITISIANS!!!!

Room 1 Camp

The week just gone was absolutely amazing. The children were wonderful (sleep deprivation and all) and it was nice to see them happy and smiling with a 24/7 living situation. We were based at the Mahia Camping ground and the facilities made our week very comfortable. We had some incredible help from parents and whanau during the week. In particular: Ali Delaney, Mid Karangaroa, Grace Ormond, Tatiana Kereru, Aunty YC, Jackson Kawana, & CJ Whakatope. Thank you for staying with us, carting children around and joining in with the activities we conquered. Also a big thank you to: all of the parents that prepared the most scrumptious meals each night, the koha of food, Onenui Station for allowing us access through the farm, Katie and Mark Bowen for letting us gate crash their shed, Will Coop for his korero on the Tasmania, Arthur Bowen for guiding us on our walk, Grace Ormond for working with our Year 8 leaders and the class, Bill Short for sharing his shell collection, Mahia Board Riders/Bernie Crowlie for his surfing instruction, Nanny Doi, Viv Kyle, Lil Morgan and Bernie Crowlie for our golfing sessions. Please have a look at Room 1’s blog and the students blogs in the coming weeks as we reflect on our goals achieved, highlights and skills/knowledge we learnt. We live in a special part of Aotearoa and the children are incredibly fortunate to be able to have an action packed week of activities on their back door step. Ka mau te wehi!

Te Mahia School Gala 2013

Well the gala has now been and gone for another year. I have worked at a number of schools but the parent and community support at Te Mahia School is one out of the books. Seeing past students and the community get in behind the planning and manning of stalls was awesome. On the day it was great to see the tamariki enjoying so many of the activities that were targeted at them. A special thank you goes to Helena McGregor who stepped up this year and took over the reigns of organising the event. It takes a special person to achieve what she has and the staff and students are incredibly grateful for the continuous hard work Helena and her team managed to pull off. This years putea has been targeted at increasing technology in classrooms. Trialling some devices and software will be up to the children so they can have an input into what will help them be engaged with their learning next year and beyond.

Wow - what an awesome night we all had. Thanks must go to Brady and Dreydon whose idea it was to hold a disco. Great food, awesome music, helpful parents and a great DJ on the night saw everyone having lots of fun! Can't wait until the next one.

Daffodil Day

There was lots of yellow today as Te Mahia School were supporting the Cancer Society. It was awesome to see the creativity, especially Caitlin in Room 1 who was an actual Daffodil. We raised a lot of money that will be presented to them at an assembly very soon. Kia ora

Staff vs Student Netball

The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day for the netball games between Te Mahia School students and the staff.  Caitlin Bell-Bregmen suggested the idea to her teacher and was responsible for making the event happen.  She coordinated everything; date, players, time and the build up.  It is great when people take initiative and want to put in the effort for cool things to happen at school.

Both teams were feeling pretty confident, the students leading the way with a comprehensive warm up prior to the game starting.  The staff dragged the chain as they organised children to be seated and eating their lunch.  The students won the toss and decided to claim the ball. Everyone took the court and our first 7 minute quarter was underway.

The staff were leading for most of the game and ended up being victorious on the day with 26 points to 4.  There was some sharp shooting from Stacy, Cherie and Aunty Jennifer which helped seal the deal.  Dean Cameron provided some strong defence in the goal circle and managed to turn the ball over a number of times for the students. Brady Kamau and Tegan Kereru worked well in the circle together.

It was a lot of fun and something we will have to do again one day soon.

Cleo the Vet

Thanks to Eve, we had a visit from Cleo and Jimmy on Monday.  Cleo works at Vet Ent in Wairoa and is very dedicated to her job. As year 7&8 students, we need to start considering our futures and possible careers.  Eve loves animals and is thinking being either a vet or a vet nurse would be a pretty cool career to have.

Number Knowledge

This term with Miss O'B we are learning about ALGEBRA.  A big part of algebra is number patterns, identifying a rule and being able to explain when the rule works.  The 'rule' is going to save us time eg, rather than needing to make a big long pattern, we can use the rule to determine how much of something we need to make it.

Some Number Knowledge we have had to brush up on includes squared and cubed numbers.  We have made these numbers with maths equipment so we have a picture in our mind of what a squared number looks like.  Our mission is to know our squared numbers all the way up to 12 squared.  Some clever cookies have also mastered their cubed numbers and some extremely clever cookies have asked for exponents eg, to the power of 6.

Maths Week 2013

Another week - another challenge conquered.  This morning Room 1 engaged in a Geometry Challenge Miss O'B set for them.  Each House had 20 minutes to find as many 2d and 3d shapes around Te Mahia School as they could.  We used the i-pads to capture the evidence and worked together as a team.  After 20 minutes had passed, we had to have a battle as two houses were tied on 15 points each.  Congratulations to Deans house who came out triumphant.  It was very, very close.  So who knows their 2d and 3d geometric names of different shapes?

Miss D'Ath - Half Marathon in Taupo

Congratulations to Miss D’Ath who completed the Taupo Half Marathon last Sunday.  If you saw her on Monday at school you would now totally understand the speed of her movement. The children were very sympathetic. What an accomplishment Miss D’Ath!

Duffy Leaders

We were lucky to have Kowhai and Michael come to Te Mahia School on Wednesday.  Their korero was all about their school they attend, subjects they are taking, extra-curricular involvement and most importantly - HOW COOL IT IS TO READ!!!
We then asked them some questions we were pondering and to explain the cool things and not so cool things about boarding school.  Thanks heaps fro coming guys!

Congratulations to Brady and her team for being the winning house last term.  Nice to see you enjoying your feast on Friday.  You guys worked hard and deserved to be the winning house.  Challenge is to see if you can do it again this term?

Te Mahia School Needs New Toilets

Miss D'Ath and Room 1 shared their ideas about why Te Mahia School desperately need new toilets. Room 1 have been busy writing letters and filming footage about the many reasons why we need new toilets and facilities that are clean and hygienic to use. A new set of toilets is going to cost close to $70,000 and we are a small school that does not have a lot of money.  Have a look at a video Room 1 filmed about the state of our toilets and some problems they have identified with them.

3-Way Conferencing

In week 2, we are going to be conducting 3 way conferences with our whanau. At the conference there will be Miss O'B, Miss D'Ath, our whanau and Room 1 peeps. We are going to be in charge of running our interview, talking about our progress and our goals for term 3. We had a little bit of fun in Room 1 with some role plays about how they might look like (it was funny to say the least). Check out our video, it will definitely make you laugh. We have a lot of preparing to do before week 2 Room 1!!!

Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award

Congratulations Dreydon on your leadership award! What at an amazing achievement at such a young age. I hope you are very proud of the reasons that you were nominated and successful with this award. It will be a challenge for you to consider all of the leadership attributes you have as you start getting ready for High School and goals you want to achieve during secondary school. Ka mau te wehi!!!

X Factor New Zealand

So tonight was semi-finals. There were some exceptional performances and some that were just OK. My money is on Jackie or Benny to win the comp and with the final fast approaching, you need to make sure you vote for your fav. So come on Room 1 - who are you picking to take out the title for 2013?

Leadership Week

This week is Leadership Week - an annual event organised by the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Trust. As a treat, Aunty Helena, Aunty Les and myself took the Year 8's into town to complete the High Ropes course at the Wairoa Community Centre. It is such as awesome feeling conquering something that is challenging. Believing in yourself that you can do whatever you put your mind to is so important in life so I hope you all continue to do it forever and ever!!!

Room 1 Goodsorts

This term, Room 1 have been focussing on including increased detail in our writing. We all seem to have wonderful ideas but are getting used to adding increased detail. Please read our nominations for TV One Goodsorts. There are some exemplars in here with outstanding details!

I would like to nominate Ali Delaney as a good sort on TV One news because she volunteers her time at St. Johns and in between her busy schedule she finds us time at our school. Ali Delaney is a humble person and deserves to be recognised for a lot she does in our community. Ali always has a positive attitude always and pushes us kids to reach for the stars and to be the best that we can be. Examples that are positively influenced include her family, friends and our small community of Mahia. It makes me feel positive and happy that there are awesome people like her. I think Ali isn’t a good sort, she is an amazing sort. My nomination should be considered because Ali Delaney is Awesome! Brady Kamau

A person I would like to nominate is Ali Delany because she appears up at our awesome school and helps out, if she uses her taringas and hears that the school needs cleaning she jumps in her white flash car and will be here within a blink to help out she puipui and the poi’s maybe its making food for camp she has come to the wetland every time we go and she helps us plant at least 400 plants she helps people when there sick because she is a volunteer with St John she only gets nothing she is not a good sort she is a awesome sort that’s why I am nominating Ali Delany  because she helps the community. The person I would like to nominate as a good sort is Henare Cooper but most people call Dog. I would like to nominate Uncle Dog for the TV One Good-Sorts Show. Every time there is a event on such as a tangi or birthday he is always doing  something for the community. Everything he does is to help others out. He would be one of the most caring people I know.  He is always teaching people such as myself about the moana and giving us really long lectures when we go on the boat!  That is why Uncle Dog should by TV Ones Good Sort!   Dreydon Hughes

As a student I would like to nominate as a good sort Mani because she does a lot with us in  kapahaka at our school.  The time she started with us is 11.30 -12.30   She all so takes me to karate because she goes there to also she does her best to get us to be great at kapahaka as an example she work hard to keep us kids at Te Mahia school she is extremely talented at her job and does it for free.  Mani gave us a new song  and some people already know it off by heart I consider  my Aunty Mani to be a good sort.  Eve Chin

A person I would like to nominate as a good sorts person is Ian Pickering. Ian is a community member who lives at Mahanga. He loves the environment and willingly shares his knowledge and skills with students at our school. He always comes to Te Mahia School every Wednesday to clean up the shade house have seedlings that we plant over the year. Then they get planted at the Opoutama wetlands. Ian Pickering mangages the wetlands by trapping stoats, weasles and rats. Sometimes he lets me come for a ride to the wetlands to plant native plants with him. He calls up the school and arranges everything and we go planting with him. Me and my dad know him very well. He lets us go duck shooting in his ponds. A few weeks ago I went on a helicopter ride because the pilot was spraying black berry, gorse and weeds. That was the best time because Ian didn’t have to do that but he wanted too. So that’s why I am nominating Ian as a good sort. Jack Delaney

I consider my mum as a good sort person, because she is amazingly great, wonderful and genourous to me, my baby brother and Dad. My Mum feeds me, my baby brother, dad and our friends.  She has very nicely made me from yongest to an older brother by giving me a baby brother, called little Hona, he is a naughty boy at times, but he is funny, wonderful cute and chubby. My Mum all the time  is caring for everyone else except for herself. She always loves me and our family and she always will. Jashyn Aupouri

A person I would like to nominate as a good sort is Aunty Liz because she helps us with our kapahaka so we can feel good on stage for kapahaka. Aunty Liz is the best that is why she should be nominated for a good sort.  She has even made her own CD and she is talented at kapahaka. Hey TV 1 news I would like to nominate my Aunty Liz Kereru for TV Ones good sorts. She is amazing at everything she does. She is humble, has a lovely personality but besides all that she takes us Te Mahia School students for kapa haka every Friday along with Mani and Maiouna. She is one of the best kapa haka teachers I have ever had and I bet you’ll like her too. Also, the great thing about her is that she does it for free, yes free and in her own time. She knows and very much thinks that we are good, no not good great. She writes amazing maori chants and songs. She has her own CD. She is a lovely guitarist and has an amazing voice and we will probably win with her.  Without her we probably wouldn’t be anywhere.  She is lovely, talented and great at everything she does.  She is so cool and if you don’t think she is you are wrong. I would like to nominate her because she teaches us in her own time. Kingi Ormond

I would like to nominate Aunty Liz Kereru for TV one news Goodsorts award. Every Friday at Te Mahia School she comes in and helps with Kapahaka. We are having our Kapahaka festival at the end of term 3. She is our kaiako.  I consider her to be a Goodsorts person because she is nice to me and all of her students. She is helpful at Kapahaka because she goes to great efforts in teaching us waiata, actions, Haka and teaching others about Maoritanga.  She is extremely talented with playing the guitar, singing and she even recorded her own CD. She encourages all students with her high expectations with Kapahaka learning. I lead Nukutarua, a waiata / chant, and she expects me to do it really well. I think she is a humble person who deserves to be recognised because she contributes so much.  She sets a great example as being a leader at our school and in our community. I hope Hayden Janes comes to vist her. Maungarongo Hemopo

I consider Ali Delanyey to be my good sort. She is not a good sort she is a awesome. Every time we go to the wetlands she is there in a blink. Ali is there to help out any time we need her. She gives up her time to help the community in any way. When we go on trips she helps transport children and she is a volunteer for St Johns. So I want to nominate Ali Delaney for what she does. Kia Ora my name is Santana I would like to nominate a wonderful and dutifully woman. She is always there for our school not to mention other people. She is one of the best Kapahaka teachers you could ever meet. One of the reasons I would like to nominate her is because she gives up her time to teach us Kapahaka and to lmake us look good on stage at the end of term three. She’s a very humble person to me and one top, talented person ever at playing the guitar. I would like to nominate Ali Delaney to be a good sort because she is a very helpful person, and she is always at school to help when we have things like Camp, planting at the wetlands, and she is also a volunteer at St Johns.  An example of how she goes above and beyond is she always helps with cleaning at our school, and with Working Bees, but mostly with everything. Our School is lucky to have her as part of our environment!  People who are positively influenced include her family, our school (Te Mahia), and friends. It makes me feel happy.
